From a distance Australia is a large island, actually the world’s largest and a continent. Seen from Australia, it looks and feels like several countries. You will get the same impression when talking with the Australians, not only is there a great variety of origins, but also a great variety of English speaking origins: Australians of several generations, British, Irish, Scottish, South African, African, Arab, American, Canadian, New Zealanders.

So what is the Australian accent? Say that it is an intermediate stage between British and American; a little sharper than American and less pitchy than British with a tendency for short cuts… you will find out.
